Meet Helen - DJ Jazzy Kappa

Dj Jazzy Kappa operates under HKR entertainment (Helen K Reed Entertainment)

I’ve been behind the decks since the late 90s. Twenty-five plus years of learning what actually makes a dance floor work, and trying to get out of the way of a good night rather than dominate it.

I stepped away from commercial DJing for a while, and came back properly in 2024. Coming back has taught me a lot — mostly that people don’t remember a flashy set, they remember feeling looked after. I’ve been lucky enough to pick up over 60 five-star reviews since.

What I do

DJ. MC. Sax, when a moment calls for something live layered over the mix — I’m still working out when that lands best, and I love that it keeps surprising me too. I’m based in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, and I travel to Greater Sydney, the Central Coast, Hunter Valley, the Illawarra and Wollongong, and the South Coast for weddings, corporate events, and milestone celebrations.

I work open-format reading what’s actually happening in the room, rather than assuming I already know what people want, although I do focus on client brief and customers preferred music and playlists.

Where I try to add something different

I’m a female DJ in a space that’s still mostly men, and a few clients have told me that changes the feel of the day in small ways I hadn’t fully expected myself. I also bring some sound healing and ecstatic dance experience into events that want something quieter and more intentional — alongside the usual 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s favourites, pop, house, disco, nu disco, EDM, and all of todays music as well as classics that never seem to go out of style.

The practical stuff

I carry $20 million Public Liability insurance and hold a current Working With Children Check, so that’s taken care of if there are teens or kids around. I’ve been fortunate to play for brands like Toyota, Macquarie University Health, NSW Ambulance, William Grant & Sons, Winten Property, Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceuticals, Solutions 89, and Snap Fitness, and at venues including International Convention Centre, William Inglis Events, Shangri-La Sydney and Peppers Hill Lodge, amongst many others - every event matters to me the same amount, whatever the size.

If you’re also after a photo booth, that’s a sister service I run — Story & Moments Photo Booth and the two are easy to bundle together.

I’d genuinely love to hear what matters most to you for your day, and your brief - that’s always where I like to start.

My Approach

I start every conversation by listening, not pitching - what matters to you, who is in the room, what you want people to feel by the end of the event.

The music comes after that not before it.

Beyond Djing I keep an eye on the practical things that actually make an event run well: timing, flow, handing the mic over smoothly, reading when the room needs a shift.

Clients tend to say the same thing back to me - that I am easy to reach, make it easy, straightforward to plan, and genuinely present on the day, rather than just running a playlist

Calm Grounded Energy

I bring a calm grounded energy to the planning process and event itself - no drama, no ego, just steady attention on what you need,

Lasting impact

What I care about most is whats left behind when the last song plays - not just a good time, but the the feeling that stays with people well beyond the event.
