Wedding Tax: Fake or Real? A Wedding DJ’s Perspective

You ask for a quote. You mention it’s a wedding. Suddenly, the price goes up.

Is that fair - or are you paying extra simply because you’re getting married?

As a Sydney wedding DJ and MC, I understand why this gets people talking. When you’re planning a wedding, the costs add up quickly. You deserve to know what you’re paying for and why.

My view? A higher price should have a clear explanation. “Because it’s a wedding” isn’t enough.

A conversation with a bride got me thinking

Recently, I joined a conversation in a bridal community where a bride was upset about what felt like inflated wedding pricing.

I shared my perspective: for my DJ and MC services, a wedding can involve more preparation, more music consultations and more detailed coordination before the event.

Another bride, who was also a business owner, challenged that.

“Wouldn’t you provide the same care and service for a birthday?”

It was a fair question.

My answer is absolutely. Every client deserves to feel heard, respected and looked after. Whether I’m playing a wedding, a 50th birthday or a corporate celebration, that standard of care stays the same.

But the amount of work involved can differ.

The same level of care doesn’t mean every event takes the same amount of time to prepare.

You see five hours behind the decks. What happens beforehand?

When you book a wedding DJ, the reception performance is the part you see.

For my wedding bookings, the work starts well before I arrive at your venue.

I want to understand you as a couple. Your story, your music tastes, your guests and how you want the celebration to feel.

Perhaps there’s a song that reminds you of someone you love. Perhaps you’re bringing together different cultures, generations or musical tastes. Perhaps you want a relaxed reception that gradually builds into a big party.

Those conversations help me create something personal.

Then we work through the moments that need particular attention: your entrance, speeches, cake cutting, first dance and final songs.

It isn’t simply choosing a track. We need to know which version, where it starts, what happens during it and who gives the cue.

If I’m also your MC, there’s additional preparation around names, pronunciations, announcements, introductions and the flow of the reception.

Your run sheet affects more than the music

A wedding reception brings several suppliers together around one timeline.

Your photographer needs to be ready for key moments. Your catering team needs to know when speeches are happening. Your venue needs to understand the sequence of events.

As your DJ and MC, I help you think through that flow and coordinate my role with the people involved.

That preparation also matters when the plan changes.

Dinner might run late. A speech might take longer than expected. You might need another few minutes with your guests before your first dance.

Knowing your priorities helps me adapt calmly, communicate clearly and keep the celebration feeling comfortable.

You may never see every detail of that preparation, but you benefit from it on the day.

Does every wedding need to cost more than a party?

No - and this is where the conversation needs a little more honesty.

A small, straightforward wedding may require less preparation than a large milestone birthday with multiple entertainment spaces and a detailed brief.

A corporate awards evening can involve extensive planning, precise cues and coordination with a production team.

The event label alone doesn’t tell you how much work is involved.

The useful questions are:

  • How long is the performance?

  • How much preparation is required?

  • Is the supplier taking on additional responsibilities?

  • What equipment and setups are needed?

  • What travel and venue access arrangements are involved?

For me, understanding those details comes before recommending a package.

What should you ask when comparing wedding DJ quotes?

If you’re looking at wedding DJ packages in Sydney or across NSW, compare the inclusions alongside the price.

A few useful questions are:

What performance hours are included?
Check when the DJ starts and finishes, and whether cocktail-hour or ceremony coverage is part of the package.

Is MC service included?
Ask what that involves, from preparation beforehand to announcements and coordination during the reception.

What planning support will we receive?
Will you have a music consultation, a music brief and assistance with your reception run sheet?

What equipment is included?
Check sound, microphones and lighting, along with any requirements for separate spaces.

Are travel, setup and pack-down included?
Ask about the total payable, and time required to bump in, including any applicable GST and additional charges.

Who will actually perform at our wedding?
Understand who you’re booking and what the contingency arrangements are if they genuinely cannot attend.

A clear package can be just as helpful as an itemised breakdown. What matters is that you understand the service and the total cost.

Care should never be the “premium upgrade”

I don’t believe birthday clients should receive less care because they aren’t getting married.

Professionalism, communication and respect belong in every booking.

What can change is the time, preparation, equipment and responsibility required to deliver the event.

That is what a supplier should be able to explain.

You should feel comfortable asking questions without being made to feel difficult or embarrassed about your budget.

Equally, understanding the work behind a quote can help you decide which parts of a service matter most to you.

So, is wedding tax fake or real?

I wouldn’t dismiss every concern about wedding pricing. And I wouldn’t assume every higher wedding quote is unfair.

I would ask: what changes in the work, and what does the couple receive for the difference?

A higher price doesn’t automatically mean better service. A lower price doesn’t automatically mean poor service.

Look for clear inclusions, thoughtful communication and an approach that makes sense for your celebration.

For my wedding DJ and MC bookings, the preparation is about helping you feel heard, shaping music around your story and supporting the flow of the day.

You deserve to understand that value before you commit.
